How Many Calories in a Shot of Vodka?

Have you ever had a scintillating debate over a late night game of quarters on how many calories are in a shot of Vodka?

How Many Calories in a Shot of Vodka?
A single 1.5 ounce shot of 80 proof vodka has approximately 109 calories. A single 1.5 ounce of 100 proof vodka has approximately 123 calories. Compared to beer and wine, Vodka and other hard liquors is very high in calories. The same amount of red wine would have only 30 calories and the same amount of beer would have only about 19 calories. Since vodka is a very popular choice in mixed drinks, the calories can really add up if you are out for a night on the town. If you're trying to lose weight, this could of course be problematic.

Does vodka have any nutritional value to go with all those calories? It is made by fermenting wheat, corn, potato, or rye so one might think it would have a fair amount of nutrients. However, vodka only contains trace amounts of vitamin B and trace amounts of phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and fluoride. A shot of vodka has no protein, fat, carbohydrate, or fiber.

In spite of its low nutrient content, vodka in moderation does have some health benefits. Some studies have indicated that an occasional shot of vodka can actually reduce the risk of heart disease. However, it is important to keep in mind that too much vodka too often can actually weaken the heart. Vodka is also being used to treat some types of cancer. Usually a diluted 40% vodka is used for this purpose. Some people even use vodka to wash their face or legs with after they shave to prevent infection.

In conclusion, Vodka is very high in calories while at the same time being very low in nutrients. However, there is nothing to suggest that an occasional indulgence would hurt most healthy people. In fact, it may even promote health in most people.
